How to Care for Your Lenses

Image
Corrective lenses are such small things that make such enormous differences in our lives. Most people who wear glasses or contacts can remember what it was like the first time they were able to see individual blades of grass and leaves on trees after putting them on. It’s important to take good care of our lenses so that we can get the maximum benefit from wearing them! Tips for Glasses Care Even with protective coatings, glasses tend to gather dust and oil as we wear them, and they require regular cleaning. As tempting as it is to reach for the corner of your shirt,  it’s better to use a microfiber or cotton cloth and some glasses cleaner . You can even make your own glasses cleaner with a drop of soap in a small spray bottle filled with water. If there’s no glasses cloth around, the edge of a cotton shirt is a passable substitute, but make sure  never to use wood-based materials like napkins or tissues . Because they’re made of wood pulp, they can scratch the lenses v...

4 Reasons Why You Should Wear Sunglasses Every Day

Image
Sunglasses are one of the coolest accessories around. It’s hard not to look sharp when you’re wearing a pair of shades. However, if the cool factor isn’t enough for you, we’ve got excuses backed by science! Here are four compelling reasons why you should wear sunglasses every day! 1. Sunglasses protect your eyes from UV rays. Arizonans know it’s important to wear sunscreen and protect their skin from UV radiation. Many don’t realize the same rule applies to their eyes! The same rays that give you a nasty sunburn can also do damage to your eyes, including cataracts and macular degeneration . Protect your peepers from the sun with a pair of sunglasses and you’ll thank yourself as you get older. 2. A set of shades can help prevent eye strain. We have an abundance of sunshine in the Sonoran Desert. This means bright light that can leave you squinting on the brightest days. When you squint, you can fatigue the eyes and leave them strained. You can also give yourself a headache. Wear y...

How Sleep and Vision Intersect

Image
Sleep deprivation hits the body and mind a lot like alcohol, but how does it affect our eyes? Getting enough sleep is great for our overall health and our eye health alike. At the other end of things, we can improve the quality of our sleep if we are more careful about what we put in front of our eyes before we go to bed. The Impact of Sleep Deprivation on Eye Health Nearly everyone knows what it’s like to feel sleep deprived in the short term. We feel grumpy and drowsy and struggle to concentrate. Over time, however, the effects are more dramatic.  Chronic sleep deprivation can weaken our immune systems, make it harder to lose weight, increase our blood pressure , make us moodier, and make us more prone to memory loss. Our eyes don’t escape unscathed either. We need at least five hours of sleep each night for our eyes to replenish themselves for a new day.  Beyond helping us keep our eyes open, our eyes need sleep to prevent eye strain, dry eye, and eye twitches. Thank...

Retinal Disorders

Image
The retina is a complex tissue consisting of several layers that coverts the light and images around us into the electrical signals that are interpreted by the brain as vision.  The retina is also an extremely delicate tissue that fills much of the inside portion of the globe.  It can be damaged through trauma, intense light such as staring at the sun for prolonged periods, and like much of the rest of our bodies, can be hamred by infection, systemic disease and a number of diseases that affect only the retina.  Some retinal problems can be urgent. These include retinal detachment, retinal trauma, hemorrhage and foreign objects that penetrate the globe. The retina can be examined using a variety of instruments including several state of the art devices that can image retinal details.  A routine dilated retinal examination is an important part of a comprehensive eye examination. This examination can detect the majority of retinal disorders including macular deg...

Polarized Lenses: Are They For You?

Image
What to Know About Polarized Sunglass Lenses Polarized sunglass lenses  offer superior protection against glare, particularly once you are out on open bodies of water. This is often a result of the way polarized sunglass lenses contain a special filter that effectively block intense, reflective light. If you’re looking into buying polarized sunglass lenses, chances are high that you already understand the hazards daylight glare will cause day after day. What you may not recognize is that sunlight is often absorbed or mirrored in many completely different directions. Sunlight bouncing off horizontal surfaces, like water, land or the hood of a automobile is typically mirrored back in a very similar horizontal direction. This reflection produces an annoying...
